Creative Frontline:

Film-maker and journalist Robert Lundahl interviews Chemehuevi NuWu Elder and Leader. Also known as Matthew Leivas, Sr. Environmental Whistleblower and Protector of the Colorado River. Part 1 of 2. The interview can also be found on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dg8I9FN9a7g

The Indian Reservation he is describing, and where he protects the Colorado River, begins on the California side and continues for 30 miles on the California side to approximately one mile south of the

Havasu Palms Resort. We will air part 2 of this interview next week.

To round out the hour, we will rerun an interview with Mahlee Yellowfeather, an Apache descendant of Geronimo, about the struggle over Oak Flat, which an act of Congress “exchanged” to Resolution Copper for the exploitation of an enormous copper deposit.

According to an article in The Intercept, “The legislation in question — the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act — was the product of a proposal then-Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake added to a must-pass defense authorization bill late one night in 2014. The addendum, known as a rider, incurred no congressional debate. Described by the San Carlos Apache as a “midnight backroom deal,” the law transferred Oak Flat to Resolution Copper, a British-Australian concern jointly owned by the extractive giants Rio Tinto and BHP, both of which had sought access to the wildly lucrative ore deposit for years.

“The project centers on a 2,200-acre area known as Oak Flat Campground, part of the Tonto National Forest, that has served as a centerpiece of Apache religious ceremony and cosmology since before settler expansion into the West. To access the ore underneath, Resolution Copper will use a technique known as block cave mining, which over several years will turn the sacred mountain into a two-mile-wide crater deep enough to hide a skyscraper.”

You’ve likely heard a lot about Maui in recent weeks, but chances are you haven’t heard a lot from Indigenous or frontline mutual aid activists working to protect and support their communities in the dearth of government support and protection.

In the first half of the show, Native Hawaiian Kamiki Carter joins the show to talk about the impact of the fires as well as the impact of widespread community organizing with Maui Rapid Response.

In the second half of the show, mutual aid and land stewardship organizer Summer Starr joins the show to discuss the censored sources of the fires, namely capitalism and colonialism. She explains the predatory push of disaster capitalists and how folks on the ground are instead pushing for decolonization and land back.
