Sounds True with Tami Simon – Insights at the Edge
David Spiegel: Self-Hypnosis for Well-Being (58:59)
https://resources.soundstrue.com/podcast/david-spiegel-self-hypnosis-for-well-being/
The practice of hypnosis is considered by many people within and outside of the medical profession to be useless, dangerous, or both. Yet studies are showing how hypnosis offers us a reliable, remarkably powerful therapeutic tool for managing pain and stress, changing unwanted habits, improving sleep, and overcoming a broad range of health challenges.
In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with author and psychiatrist Dr. David Spiegel to separate the facts from the fiction, exploring: hypnosis as a naturally occurring state of highly focused attention; letting go of our usual preconceptions about ourselves; cognitive flexibility (not “suggestibility”); Dionysians, Apollonians, and Odysseans—three categories of hypnotizability; the Spiegel eye-roll technique; a guided experience of self-hypnosis for stress and anxiety; hypnosis vs. meditation; respecting and protecting your body; focusing on what you’re for instead of what you’re against; and a case example using self-hypnosis to heal trauma and dissociation (please note: this example occurs at 39:10–41:03 and includes a reference to sexual assault).
Note: This episode originally aired on Sounds True One, where these special episodes of Insights at the Edge are available to watch live on video and with exclusive access to Q&As with our guests. Learn more at join.soundstrue.com.

Dream News! Tis a description and an exhortation (and title of just now and more soon council)
Caroline hosts Tom Cheetham, “a rogue scholar of the imagination in esoteric Islam interweaving the planes of the real into his continuous and wonderfully whacked-out song.” – Joseph Donahue, author of (many books, including) “Imaginal Love – The meanings of Imagination in Henry Corbin and James Hillman”
Ancestor Ally Mentors, the likes of Hillman, Henri Corbin, and Jung excavated and crafted keys which they are now handing to us. So let’s put the keys in the locks, and tease erudition into pertinent practice, the world being on fire, and all..
Tom :”There is an open field of reality accessible to us through the imagination.”
Wonder, Curiosity, and Willingness partner with Imagination to open portals of participatory cahooting between worlds…. Because we humans cannot resolve any of the innumerable cruel conundrums we have imposed on our kin – by ourselves. Tis by ourselves that got us it into this pickle.
Participatory Animism, Biomimicry, Mutual Aid – the way to go….

How Many Lies will it take Before you are part of the Lie? Part 25

(The website offers many links to content from Moon of Alabama about “astro-turfing” – fake “grassroots” activity sponsored and produced by state agents.)
Introduction: Updating the Ukraine war, this program highlights a number of considerations: The phenomenon of “Astroturfing” to generate increased support for the war; the casting of a Belarus veteran of the Nazi Azov formations as a political martyr; the western regime-change institutions’ support for such persons; the New York Times’ shifting coverage about Nazis in Ukraine; Russian warning at the U.N. in October of 2022 about Ukraine’s plans to blow up the Nova Khakovka dam; Washington Post’s December, 2022, article about Ukraine’s trial assaults on the dam; examination of the distinct possibility that a British Storm Shadow missile was used to blow up the dam. Covert Action Bulletin with Rachel Hu and Chris Garaffa
https://covertactionmagazine.com/2023/08/23/covertaction-bulletin-privatization-and-dollarization-will-argentina-fall-to-the-right/
In Argentina, the far right-wing Libertarian candidate Javier Milei of the Liberty Advances party won 30% of the country’s presidential primary, calling for an end to “Kirchnerism”—really, a call to end the social programs fought for and won by the Argentinian people. We dive deeper into the analysis of how we got here, and what this surge in popularity of libertarianism really means.
Meanwhile in Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León of Movimiento Semilla (Seed Movement) won the presidential election on August 20th and will be sworn in on January 14th of 2024. His defeat of the center-right Sandra Torres, candidate of the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party, by a margin of 58% to 37%, is a sign of change against the “pact of the corrupt”.
We’re joined by Zoe Pepper Cunningham, Co-Editor of People’s Dispatch to get a deeper understanding of what these results mean for their respective countries, for Latin America and more. (52:59)
Rachel Hu is a journalist with “BreakThrough News,” a new independent media project, where she hosts the podcast “It’s Not You, It’s Capitalism.” She is also a host on WBAI 99.5FM in NYC and has been an anti-war and anti-racist activist with the ANSWER Coalition for the last decade. Rachel can be reached at: rachel@wbai.org.
Chris Garaffa has been an anti-imperialist and social justice organizer since joining the movement against the Iraq war in 2003. Chris is a weekly guest on Sputnik Radio’s “By Any Means Necessary,” and co-hosts the podcast “The Reboot,” focusing on the intersection between technology and human rights. Out-FM
At least 175 transgender people were killed across the United States between 2017 and 2021. Only 28 cases resulted in murder convictions. Sixty-one cases remain unsolved. Last November, Insider -- an international, large-scale digital news platform -- published its comprehensive investigation into those homicides, the most in-depth examination of killings of transgender people in the U.S. to date, titled "Deaths in the Family." Based on a year of public records battles and countless conversations with grief-stricken communities and intransigent police and prosecutors, this huge under-reported story was assembled by a dozen reporters. They spoke with friends, family, and communities across the country to uncover stories of people killed by partners, parents, dates, clients, and police officers.
The reporting team was led by longtime queer journalist and former host of WBAI's Beyond the Pale program, Esther Kaplan, who is now the Investigative Editor at insider.com. The series covered law-enforcement killings, hate crimes, intimate-partner violence, the vulnerabilities of sex workers, unsolved cases, the ways transphobia colors the criminal-justice system, the troubled history between the police and the transgender community, and the fatal attack on an LGBTQ nightclub, Club Q, last November.
Esther noted, "Homicides spiked just as states accelerated their introduction of anti-trans legislation." This year, the Insider series has been named a finalist for honors by GLAAD, the largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, as well as the National Association of Black Journalists, the Association of LGBTQ Journalists, and the Online News Association. Esther Kaplan Investigative Editor at insider.com (57:55)

Creative Frontline – "Mining and Monuments" with Patrick Gonzales-Rogers
Pat Gonzales Rogers is a distinguished lecturer at the Yale University School of the Environment (YSE) and the former Executive Director of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition. Raised in Hawaii by a single mother, Pat Gonzales-Rogers operates from a cultural and moral precept. Gonzales-Rogers explained that the Hawaiian word “kuleana” loosely translates to mean "responsibility." You have a responsibility to your people, and regardless of your position, there’s always a place for you. “If I’m not in this position,” Gonzales-Rogers said, “I’m probably called to another, and there’s a place for me. We all have a call to serve.”
When asked about his journey to his current position, Gonzales-Rogers credited being surrounded by strong, deliberate, intentional women very early in his life.
He is teaching a tribal resources and sovereignty clinic hosted by the Yale Center for Environmental Justice (YCEJ), which is open to students from YSE, Yale Law School, Yale School of Management, and Yale Divinity School.
Producer Robert Lundahl says: “It's a very strong capstone for all the prior episodes and an introduction to what is to come, including exposes of SLAAP Suits and dirty deals.”
Introduction to the Creative Frontline series by Preston Arrow-Weed.
1 AM

Prosecuting Presidents Around the World
https://scholarscircle.org/
The criminal indictments of former President Trump have created a political crisis in their unprecedented nature. Historically, U.S. presidents have not faced criminal charges even in cases where there is a high likelihood of guilt, in large part due to respect for the office. Gerald Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon embodies this norm.
What can the U.S. learn from other countries that have prosecuted former presidents? And what can we learn from American history about the prosecutions of political figures? Is the prosecution of former heads of state simply the weaponization of justice mechanisms? And how common is this political charge?
Jeremi Suri is Professor in the Department of History and the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the Mack Brown Distinguished Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of The Impossible Presidency: The Rise and Fall of America’s Highest Office and his latest book Civil War by Other Means: America’s Long and Unfinished Fight For Democracy. He hosts the podcast This is Democracy.
Tom Ginsburg is Leo Spitz Professor of International Law and Ludwig and Hilde Wolf Research Scholar at the University of Chicago Law School. He is the author of the books The Endurance of National Constitutions, Constitutions in Authoritarian Regimes, and co-author of the paper The Comparative Constitutional Law of Presidential Impeachment.
