How Many Lies will it take Before you are part of the Lie? Part 25

(The website offers many links to content from Moon of Alabama about “astro-turfing” – fake “grassroots” activity sponsored and produced by state agents.)

Introduction: Updating the Ukraine war, this program highlights a number of considerations: The phenomenon of “Astroturfing” to generate increased support for the war; the casting of a Belarus veteran of the Nazi Azov formations as a political martyr; the western regime-change institutions’ support for such persons; the New York Times’ shifting coverage about Nazis in Ukraine; Russian warning at the U.N. in October of 2022 about Ukraine’s plans to blow up the Nova Khakovka dam; Washington Post’s December, 2022, article about Ukraine’s trial assaults on the dam; examination of the distinct possibility that a British Storm Shadow missile was used to blow up the dam. Covert Action Bulletin with Rachel Hu and Chris Garaffa

https://covertactionmagazine.com/2023/08/23/covertaction-bulletin-privatization-and-dollarization-will-argentina-fall-to-the-right/

In Argentina, the far right-wing Libertarian candidate Javier Milei of the Liberty Advances party won 30% of the country’s presidential primary, calling for an end to “Kirchnerism”—really, a call to end the social programs fought for and won by the Argentinian people. We dive deeper into the analysis of how we got here, and what this surge in popularity of libertarianism really means.

Meanwhile in Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León of Movimiento Semilla (Seed Movement) won the presidential election on August 20th and will be sworn in on January 14th of 2024. His defeat of the center-right Sandra Torres, candidate of the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party, by a margin of 58% to 37%, is a sign of change against the “pact of the corrupt”.

We’re joined by Zoe Pepper Cunningham, Co-Editor of People’s Dispatch to get a deeper understanding of what these results mean for their respective countries, for Latin America and more. (52:59)

Rachel Hu is a journalist with “BreakThrough News,” a new independent media project, where she hosts the podcast “It’s Not You, It’s Capitalism.” She is also a host on WBAI 99.5FM in NYC and has been an anti-war and anti-racist activist with the ANSWER Coalition for the last decade. Rachel can be reached at: rachel@wbai.org.

Chris Garaffa has been an anti-imperialist and social justice organizer since joining the movement against the Iraq war in 2003. Chris is a weekly guest on Sputnik Radio’s “By Any Means Necessary,” and co-hosts the podcast “The Reboot,” focusing on the intersection between technology and human rights. Out-FM

At least 175 transgender people were killed across the United States between 2017 and 2021. Only 28 cases resulted in murder convictions. Sixty-one cases remain unsolved. Last November, Insider -- an international, large-scale digital news platform -- published its comprehensive investigation into those homicides, the most in-depth examination of killings of transgender people in the U.S. to date, titled "Deaths in the Family." Based on a year of public records battles and countless conversations with grief-stricken communities and intransigent police and prosecutors, this huge under-reported story was assembled by a dozen reporters. They spoke with friends, family, and communities across the country to uncover stories of people killed by partners, parents, dates, clients, and police officers.

The reporting team was led by longtime queer journalist and former host of WBAI's Beyond the Pale program, Esther Kaplan, who is now the Investigative Editor at insider.com. The series covered law-enforcement killings, hate crimes, intimate-partner violence, the vulnerabilities of sex workers, unsolved cases, the ways transphobia colors the criminal-justice system, the troubled history between the police and the transgender community, and the fatal attack on an LGBTQ nightclub, Club Q, last November.

Esther noted, "Homicides spiked just as states accelerated their introduction of anti-trans legislation." This year, the Insider series has been named a finalist for honors by GLAAD, the largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, as well as the National Association of Black Journalists, the Association of LGBTQ Journalists, and the Online News Association. Creative Frontline – "Mining and Monuments" with Patrick Gonzales-Rogers

Pat Gonzales Rogers is a distinguished lecturer at the Yale University School of the Environment (YSE) and the former Executive Director of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition. Raised in Hawaii by a single mother, Pat Gonzales-Rogers operates from a cultural and moral precept. Gonzales-Rogers explained that the Hawaiian word “kuleana” loosely translates to mean "responsibility." You have a responsibility to your people, and regardless of your position, there’s always a place for you. “If I’m not in this position,” Gonzales-Rogers said, “I’m probably called to another, and there’s a place for me. We all have a call to serve.”

When asked about his journey to his current position, Gonzales-Rogers credited being surrounded by strong, deliberate, intentional women very early in his life.

He is teaching a tribal resources and sovereignty clinic hosted by the Yale Center for Environmental Justice (YCEJ), which is open to students from YSE, Yale Law School, Yale School of Management, and Yale Divinity School.

Producer Robert Lundahl says: “It's a very strong capstone for all the prior episodes and an introduction to what is to come, including exposes of SLAAP Suits and dirty deals.”

Prosecuting Presidents Around the World

https://scholarscircle.org/

The criminal indictments of former President Trump have created a political crisis in their unprecedented nature. Historically, U.S. presidents have not faced criminal charges even in cases where there is a high likelihood of guilt, in large part due to respect for the office. Gerald Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon embodies this norm.

What can the U.S. learn from other countries that have prosecuted former presidents? And what can we learn from American history about the prosecutions of political figures? Is the prosecution of former heads of state simply the weaponization of justice mechanisms? And how common is this political charge?

Sounds True – Tami Simon -solo podcast on being a Spiritual Entrepreneur

https://resources.soundstrue.com/podcast/tami-simon-being-a-spiritual-entrepreneur/

A magazine article about Sounds True founder Tami Simon referred to her as a “spiritual entrepreneur.” At first, Tami wasn’t sure about the label. Yet over time, she came to appreciate and embrace it. Today, the art of spiritual entrepreneurship is a central facet of Sounds True’s Inner MBA® program.

In this host-only episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami shares her thoughts and feelings about what it means to lead a company dedicated to the well-being of its employees as equally as it is to business success. For anyone looking to bridge their innermost values with how they make a living, Tami reveals seven principles of the spiritual entrepreneur, with insightful guidance on honoring the voice of the heart; leading with presence; why relationships need to come first; creating a culture of care, engagement, and well-being; alternating between high performance and good rest; how to embrace challenges as growth opportunities; claiming our personal agency and doing the work of “cleaning up”; business as a means to address real social needs; maintaining trust in the unfolding process; making a commitment to “lift each other up” in the way we do business; recognizing our interdependence; and more.

Tami Simon started Sounds True at the age of 22 with a dream and a tape recorder. Though she had no experience running a business and only a vague idea of what she wanted the company to be, Tami had her guiding principle strongly in place: to disseminate spiritual wisdom. Over its 36-year history, Sounds True has grown into a multimedia publisher that has produced over 6,000 titles, has been included twice in the Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing companies, and is North America’s leading publisher of spoken-word spiritual teachings.

One of the world’s very first organizations to focus on multiple bottom lines as part of its founding mandate, Sounds True has expanded steadily over the years while staying true to its original mission. Partnering with the leading spiritual teachers of our time, Sounds True now has a successful book publishing program (distributed by Macmillan) and has grown to produce events, certification programs, and transformational online learning experiences.

Tami hosts the popular Sounds True podcast, Insights at the Edge, which has now been downloaded more than 20 million times. She is also the founder of the Sounds True Foundation, which is dedicated to bringing spiritual education to people who would otherwise not have access. She lives in Boulder, Colorado, and in British Columbia with her wife, Julie Kramer, and their two spoodles, Raspberry and Bula.

Conscious business - Jeremy Hunter: Untaught Essentials for Business Humans

https://resources.soundstrue.com/podcast/jeremy-hunter-untaught-essentials-for-business-humans/

How do you transform your mind, and how do you do it in real time amidst the challenges of work and life? How do you remain openhearted and generous in a competitive or even cutthroat environment? These aren’t usually the kinds of questions that businesspeople ask themselves. Yet it’s become Jeremy Hunter’s mission to help today’s entrepreneurs and organizational leaders realize the incredible value of asking—and answering—these deep questions.

In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with the core faculty member of Sounds True’s Inner MBA® program and a renowned authority on mindfulness and leadership about the “untaught essentials for business humans,” discussing the lifesaving practice of meditation; training our perception (and not just our intellect); why managers must learn how to manage themselves; placing a high value on attention and presence; examining how you construct your experience; using spiritual tools and teachings to create real business results; unconditional love; developing somatic intelligence; why it’s so important to be grounded as a leader; setting the emotional tone for the group you work with; activating our collaborative superpowers by caring about and meeting each other’s needs; transforming fear and anxiety into vitality and joy; pleasure, enjoyment, and recovering from “Frivolity Deficiency Syndrome”; acknowledging what is beautiful in your world; gratitude vs. appreciation; the opportunity for businesspeople in our times of uncertainty and accelerating change; creating a relationship with solidity; letting go of the beliefs and behaviors that no longer fit; and more.

Note: This episode originally aired on Sounds True One, where these special episodes of Insights at the Edge are available to watch live on video and with exclusive access to Q&As with our guests. Learn more at join.soundstrue.com.

Dave Emory’s For the Record

At Dave’s suggestion, we are running an archival edition of the program that he pulled up because of the atomic bomb anniversaries and the interest in the realities behind the recent film release “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan. This focuses on research about an explosion at Port Chicago. Please note that the email address given in the audio, portchicago.org, is no longer valid; it leads to a Japanese language site which doesn’t appear to relate to the topic at hand. Dave recorded the original in February and cited the connection to Black History Month, which will become evident in the program; appropriate then to run it not only in relation to the atomic bomb anniversaries, but during Black August, a month of commemoration and remembrance of Black freedom fighters, martyrs, and incarcerated political prisoners.

FOR THE RECORD (58+ min)

FTR#1307 Interview with Peter Vogel (Reprise of FTR#444 Because of the Attention Generated by the Movie “Oppenheimer”)

POSTED BY DAVE EMORY ⋅ AUGUST 12, 2023

FTR#1307

Introduction: Following up information presented in Miscellaneous Archive Show M23 and FTRs 129, 163, this broadcast features the landmark research of Peter Vogel on the Port Chicago explosion of 7/17/1944. One of the largest man-made disasters in history, the Port Chicago explosion claimed the lives of 320 sailors, 220 of them African Americans. Subsequently, African-American sailors refused to continue loading ammunition at Port Chicago and were convicted of Mutiny. Officially the explosion of conventional munitions aboard an ammunition ship, the E.A. Bryan, the Port Chicago blast was actually the test of an early atomic weapon, the autocatalytic uranium hydride lateral implosion experimental device—named the Mark II. After relating Peter’s long odyssey exploring the explosion and the official dissembling that surrounds the event, the program relates the fascinating documentary trail confirming the nature of the explosion and the chronology of this early, significant step in the development of the atomic weapons.

Program Highlights Include: Peter’s proof that a sufficient amount of fissionable material for testing a fission weapon was available in 1944 (despite official pronouncements to the contrary); the negative reactions of Edward Teller (father of the H‑bomb) and Donald Kerr (director of Los Alamos National Laboratory) to Peter’s inquiries about Port Chicago; the tremendous interest of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in this (supposedly conventional) explosion; the background of Captain William Parsons (the point man for the Los Alamos research on Port Chicago); the characteristics of the explosion that pinpoint it as being a nuclear fission blast; correspondence among some of the principals in the Manhattan Project confirming that the Port Chicago explosion was a test of the Mark II; indications that the Germans were working on a uranium hydride weapon; Soviet espionage on the Manhattan Project that indicated awareness of the test of Mark II; the possible significance of the Port Chicago explosion for the revocation of Robert Oppenheimer’s security clearance; the significance of the Port Chicago explosion in the history of African-American civil liberties.

Note: This description is formatted by presenting the questions that Dave asked Peter Vogel, and then a synoptic overview of Peter’s response. For more detailed information about the Port Chicago explosion, see The Last Wave from Port Chicago: https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Last_Wave_from_Port_Chicago/xaWstgAACAAJ?hl=en

TUC Radio: Oppenheimer and the Hiroshima & Nagasaki a-bombs (30 min)

Two weeks before Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day 2023 Paul Jay and Peter Kuznick had a conversation about the just released film Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan. They acknowledged the importance of the film at a time when the risk of a nuclear war is the highest since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. But they also raised the question why it is still possible to claim that the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima saved lives by ending WWII.

Thanks to Paul Jay, host and co-founder of The Analysis, for inviting Peter Kuznick, professor of history and director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University and co-author with Oliver Stone of the Showtime series, The Untold History of the United States.

This excerpt from their one hour conversation can be found on YouTube under the title: Oppenheimer: U.S. Developed First Strike Weapon and Used Japan to Prove it.
