Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz responding to questions from Nick Estes about the Green Corn Rebellion

This is the last of three programs on the Indigenous People's History of the US. On October 11, 2017 Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz gave a talk at the Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe New Mexico. In this last segment Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz makes inspiring comments on two questions asked by Nick Estes. He is member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, and doctoral candidate at the University of New Mexico.

First she remembers the forgotten history of the Green Corn Rebellion in Oklahoma. When Woodrow Wilson declared war in 1917 the poor tenant farmers in Oklahoma forged a coalition of Whites, African Americans and Indians. They were united by the recognition that the family would starve if they lost their sons. Under leadership of the Seminole Indians they wrote a manifesto, created a liberated zone by blowing up bridges and tried to embark on an anti-war march through the South with the goal to establish a socialist commonwealth. Their movement was betrayed by an informer and mostly white militia members confronted them and ended the uprising.

This program ends with a moving argument that the tending of corn and most vegetables that are know today by peoples in the Western Hemisphere had created extraordinary civilizations from Terra de Fuego to the Subarctic. They were on par with the other - more famous - civilizations in the Middle East as well as China. European Colonialism appropriated these already existing civilizations, shoved the people aside, and then privatized the wealth.

Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz is not only professor emerita of ethnic studies with a focus on history but has also been part of the International Indigenous movement for more than four decades. Along with groups such as the International Indian Treaty Council she advocated up to the level of the United Nations for indigenous sovereignty and land rights.

She is the author of many books including Roots of Resistance, The Great Sioux Nation, and An Indigenous Peoples History of the United States. Another recent book is Loaded: A Disarming History of the Second Amendment - published by City Lights.

Thanks to the Lannan Foundation for permission to use the audio from the pod-cast they produced. It was recorded in Santa Fe on October 11, 2017. You can find the pod-cast or film at their web site lannan.org/

Tami Simon – Sounds True Insights from the Edge: Matt Guttman – Dealing with a Lifetime of Panic Attacks

https://resources.soundstrue.com/podcast/matt-gutman-conquering-a-lifetime-of-panic-attacks/

28% of Americans will experience a panic attack in their lifetime. Some researchers say that number is closer to 50%. Renowned ABC News correspondent, Matt Gutman, never felt afraid when assigned to active and dangerous war zones. Yet when he had to speak on live television in front of a viewership of 9 million people, the seemingly unflappable reporter suffered intense panic attacks that nearly cost him his job. To help anyone whose life has been impacted by this often misunderstood mental health challenge, Gutman shares his personal journey in No Time to Panic.

In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Gutman about the book and the hard-won insights he brings his readers, exploring: The importance of destigmatizing panic attack disorder; conventional and alternative healing modalities; “retiring the drill sergeant” (aka managing the inner critic); excavating unresolved grief; how panic disorder can metastasize into other psychological issues; physical threats vs. social threats (and how we tolerate them); the evolutionary purpose of anxiety; how vulnerability is often the first step toward healing; the paradox of welcoming your panic; psychedelics and ego transcendence; the power of mindfulness and meditation; and more.

Note: This episode originally aired on Sounds True One, where these special episodes of Insights at the Edge are available to watch live on video and with exclusive access to Q&As with our guests. Learn more at join.soundstrue.com.

Matt Gutman is ABC News’s chief national correspondent. A multi-award-winning reporter, Gutman contributes regularly to ”World News Tonight with David Muir,” ”20/20,” ”Good Morning America,” and ”Nightline.” He has reported from fifty countries across the globe and is the author of “The Boys in the Cave: Deep Inside the Impossible Rescue in Thailand.” He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

The Magical Mystery Tour: The science of consciousness and communication after death

With Tonio Epstein

Daniel Drasin is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, photographer and media producer. Since the early 1990s, he has been actively investigating the field of afterlife communication through traditional mental and physical mediumship as well as modern electronics, which are thoroughly documented in his two full length documentary films Scole: The Afterlife Experiment, and Calling Earth. His new book is A New Science of the Afterlife: Space, Time & the Consciousness Code. All of which demonstrate lots of solid irrefutable evidence of communication and physical manifestation from the other side, or the afterlife, as hard as that might be to believe. For many, this will be truly mind bending stuff, and challenging everything many have been brought up and or educated to believe. We also talk about skepticism and science.

The Magical Mystery Tour is a show that dives into the heart of things exploring new ideas and new ways of seeing and being in this wondrous crazy world we share together. New shows are available weekly by Monday. Feel free to contact me at 802-229-5123 or tonio@together.net

Dave Emory – “How Groovy Was It Really?” FTR #1307

Introduction: Exploring aspects of the “counter-culture” of the 1960’s against the background of the CIA and military’s experimentation with mind-altering substances and various mind-control techniques, this program asks the question: “Was it really good?”

Key Points of Analysis and Discussion Include:

1.–Details concerning SPAN, the operational code-name for the dosing with LSD of the entire town of Pont St.-Esprit in Southern France.

2.–The story of William Hayward, the director of the ’60s cult film Easy Rider. Hayward was the victim of psychiatric confinement by elements associated with the intelligence community.

3.–The monitoring of Ken Kesey’s LSD events by members of the intelligence community.

4.–Former OSS agent Gregory Bateson’s stewardship of the introduction of Ken Kesey to LSD.

5.–Sourcing for the information about the Bateson/Kesey dynamic and discussion of CIA and military experiments with mind-altering substances at the University of Vermont.

6.–CIA operative George Hunter White’s surreptitious dosing of unwitting subjects with LSD.

7.–George Hunter White’s arrest of jazz singer Billie Holiday for opium possession in 1949. Drug arrests destroyed Holiday’s ability to work in establishments that served alcohol.

8.–The story of a San Francisco event featuring the cream of the psychedelic bands of the time. The event benefitted the Hare Krishna cult.

9.–Discussion of the fascist philosophy of the leader of the Hare Krishna cult.

10.–The biography of John Perry Barlow, former campaign manager for Dick Cheney and lyricist for the Grateful Dead. Barlow’s role with the EFF, an organization with many worthy members and reputation but one which, nonetheless, has worked for the intelligence community.

11.–Barlow’s interaction with the CIA and NSA and an examination of the possibility of his stewardship of social media.

A recent article in the New York Times attacked peace groups and activists who oppose the U.S. government’s drive towards war with China. Just days later, Senator Marco Rubio sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding an investigation into Code Pink, the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, Dongsheng and others named in the article.

While they differ on tactics or on domestic social issues, both wings of the mainstream establishment in the U.S. are united in their effort to prevent China from becoming a world power and threatening the imperialist order. We’re joined by Ben Becker, the Editor-in-Chief of BreakThrough News, to investigate this New McCarthyism and review the history of the Red Scare from World War I through the Civil Rights movement.

Marking the anniversary of the launch of the endless war (on “terror”) that is still continuing in new forms , we present a deeper episode from Michael C. Ruppert, who exposed US government complicity with cocaine and other drug dealing, the likelihood that the US knew about and allowed 9-11-2001 to happen, and the subsequent machinations around peak oil and environmental devastation caused by the profit seeking forces he characterized as TPTB -The Powers That Be. Here he looks at the roots of Warrior Culture and its consequences for the planet.

Ruppert on Warrior Culture, Collapse, and The Garden — Mike Ruppert discusses the need to dismantle the warrior culture. The evidence from pre-historical societies shows that violent domination is not inherent in human behavior—it has been learned, and it can be unlearned. He also talks about Daniel Quinn's Ishmael, which reveals a culture that is killing the world around it. Of note, he relates the parable of an ever-consuming Adam, first outgrowing the garden, then the region, until he finally consumes the entire earth, and then.... Ruppert finishes up with a review of what's GOOD about peak oil and collapse. (1:04)

Your work is always on my “recommended reading/listening” list for folks.” Yip-Yip! Her Latest is “Turning Terrestrial Tides Tarot”

From PM Press – Sara Calvarese: “We’re in turbulent times. The US is experiencing its first Pluto Return, and Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are all set to move into new zodiac signs in the near future. The astrology suggests that we’re collectively standing on the precipice of a major shift here on Earth.” So, how do we use this astrological energy of change to our advantage? The 78 tarot archetypes invite us to self-reflect and entertain curiosity around designing our future within our larger communities. During these times of intense transformation, tarot can act as both a mirror and an anchor for personal empowerment, reminding us that we write our tomorrow. This DIY quality is reflected in the Turning Terrestrial Tides Tarot artwork. The travel-friendly, poker-sized deck was created in the approachable cut-and-paste collage style of 90s zines and includes the astrological linkages to each tarot archetype as well as words to reflect on, both on the cards and within the included mini guidebook. Dave Emory – For the Record #1304 Albert Hofmann, the Nazis and the CIA

https://spitfirelist.com/for-the-record/ftr1304-albert-hofmann-the-nazis-and-the-cia/

Transformed into something of an icon during the “Psychedelic Era” of the 1960’s, Sandoz’s Albert Hofmann’s political affiliations are fundamentally different from his “Peace and Love” persona minted during that time. The reality of that time is fundamentally different from the surviving cultural and political narrative. This program sets forth disturbing facts about Hofmann, his relationship with the CIA and the Sandoz firm’s activities in World War II.

“. . . . In the same interview [Gordon] Wasson said that Albert Hofmann ‘worked in some way with the CIA’ and that Hoffman’s ‘discoveries were imparted in whole by Sandoz to the U.S. government. Sandoz wanted to be on the right side of things.’ Hofmann’s connection to the CIA has never been officially confirmed by the CIA, which maintains a policy of not commenting on or revealing information on foreign citizens who find their way into its employment. Former agency officials have commented anonymously that several Sandoz scientists and officials, including Hofmann, maintained a close relationship with the CIA, but the ‘Agency never fully trusted the Swiss’ and ‘always held a dual insurance policy with Sandoz’ by vetting and placing covert employees within the firm’s laboratories and administration. . . .”

Elements of Discussion and Analysis Include: The World War II indictment of Sandoz for collaborating with Nazi Germany; Hofmann’s work for the CIA; the presence of U.S. biological warfare personnel in France at the time of the disastrous Pont St.-Esprit ergot/LSD outbreak; Hofmann’s presence in Pont St.-Esprit in the immediate aftermath of the outbreak; Hofmann’s misrepresentation of the cause of the outbreak, attributing it to the use of a mercury compound used to preserve seeds: ” . . . . ‘The mass poisoning in the southern France city of Pont-St. Esprit in the year 1951, which many have attributed to ergot-containing bread, actually had nothing to do with ergotism. It rather involved poisoning by an organic mercury compound that was utilized for disinfecting seeds]’ . . . .”; Hofmann’s discussion with doctors investigating the outbreak in the immediate aftermath of the event–a discussion in which the mercury poisoning theory was dismissed: ” . . . .The doctors at the meeting agreed that mercury poisoning was not evident in any manner, specially because of the persistent lack of kidney or liver damage. . . .”; an account of the Pont St.-Esprit outbreak.

Covert Action Bulletin: Will BRICS Break the US World Order?

After their closely-watched 15th summit, the core member nations of BRICS --Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- have accepted six new members: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who will become members on January 1, 2024. More than a dozen other countries have applied for membership.

But what is BRICS? As the world trends from a unipolar hierarchy led by the United States, to a multipolar reality with nations like Russia and China playing key political and economic roles challenging the reach of the West’s sphere of influence, we investigate what this grouping is, perhaps more importantly what it isn’t, and how the U.S. empire is reacting. We’re joined by Amanda Yee, host of Radio Free Amanda.

Sounds True with Tami Simon – Insights at the Edge

David Spiegel: Self-Hypnosis for Well-Being (58:59)

https://resources.soundstrue.com/podcast/david-spiegel-self-hypnosis-for-well-being/

The practice of hypnosis is considered by many people within and outside of the medical profession to be useless, dangerous, or both. Yet studies are showing how hypnosis offers us a reliable, remarkably powerful therapeutic tool for managing pain and stress, changing unwanted habits, improving sleep, and overcoming a broad range of health challenges.

In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with author and psychiatrist Dr. David Spiegel to separate the facts from the fiction, exploring: hypnosis as a naturally occurring state of highly focused attention; letting go of our usual preconceptions about ourselves; cognitive flexibility (not “suggestibility”); Dionysians, Apollonians, and Odysseans—three categories of hypnotizability; the Spiegel eye-roll technique; a guided experience of self-hypnosis for stress and anxiety; hypnosis vs. meditation; respecting and protecting your body; focusing on what you’re for instead of what you’re against; and a case example using self-hypnosis to heal trauma and dissociation (please note: this example occurs at 39:10–41:03 and includes a reference to sexual assault).

Note: This episode originally aired on Sounds True One, where these special episodes of Insights at the Edge are available to watch live on video and with exclusive access to Q&As with our guests. Learn more at join.soundstrue.com.

Introduction: Updating the Ukraine war, this program highlights a number of considerations: The phenomenon of “Astroturfing” to generate increased support for the war; the casting of a Belarus veteran of the Nazi Azov formations as a political martyr; the western regime-change institutions’ support for such persons; the New York Times’ shifting coverage about Nazis in Ukraine; Russian warning at the U.N. in October of 2022 about Ukraine’s plans to blow up the Nova Khakovka dam; Washington Post’s December, 2022, article about Ukraine’s trial assaults on the dam; examination of the distinct possibility that a British Storm Shadow missile was used to blow up the dam. We dive deeper into the analysis of how we got here, and what this surge in popularity of libertarianism really means.

Meanwhile in Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León of Movimiento Semilla (Seed Movement) won the presidential election on August 20th and will be sworn in on January 14th of 2024. His defeat of the center-right Sandra Torres, candidate of the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party, by a margin of 58% to 37%, is a sign of change against the “pact of the corrupt”.

Out-FM

At least 175 transgender people were killed across the United States between 2017 and 2021. Only 28 cases resulted in murder convictions. Sixty-one cases remain unsolved. Last November, Insider -- an international, large-scale digital news platform -- published its comprehensive investigation into those homicides, the most in-depth examination of killings of transgender people in the U.S. to date, titled "Deaths in the Family." Based on a year of public records battles and countless conversations with grief-stricken communities and intransigent police and prosecutors, this huge under-reported story was assembled by a dozen reporters. They spoke with friends, family, and communities across the country to uncover stories of people killed by partners, parents, dates, clients, and police officers.

The reporting team was led by longtime queer journalist and former host of WBAI's Beyond the Pale program, Esther Kaplan, who is now the Investigative Editor at insider.com. The series covered law-enforcement killings, hate crimes, intimate-partner violence, the vulnerabilities of sex workers, unsolved cases, the ways transphobia colors the criminal-justice system, the troubled history between the police and the transgender community, and the fatal attack on an LGBTQ nightclub, Club Q, last November.

Esther noted, "Homicides spiked just as states accelerated their introduction of anti-trans legislation." This year, the Insider series has been named a finalist for honors by GLAAD, the largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, as well as the National Association of Black Journalists, the Association of LGBTQ Journalists, and the Online News Association. Creative Frontline – "Mining and Monuments" with Patrick Gonzales-Rogers

Pat Gonzales Rogers is a distinguished lecturer at the Yale University School of the Environment (YSE) and the former Executive Director of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition. Raised in Hawaii by a single mother, Pat Gonzales-Rogers operates from a cultural and moral precept. Gonzales-Rogers explained that the Hawaiian word “kuleana” loosely translates to mean "responsibility." You have a responsibility to your people, and regardless of your position, there’s always a place for you. “If I’m not in this position,” Gonzales-Rogers said, “I’m probably called to another, and there’s a place for me. We all have a call to serve.”

When asked about his journey to his current position, Gonzales-Rogers credited being surrounded by strong, deliberate, intentional women very early in his life.

He is teaching a tribal resources and sovereignty clinic hosted by the Yale Center for Environmental Justice (YCEJ), which is open to students from YSE, Yale Law School, Yale School of Management, and Yale Divinity School.

Producer Robert Lundahl says: “It's a very strong capstone for all the prior episodes and an introduction to what is to come, including exposes of SLAAP Suits and dirty deals.”

Prosecuting Presidents Around the World

https://scholarscircle.org/

The criminal indictments of former President Trump have created a political crisis in their unprecedented nature. Historically, U.S. presidents have not faced criminal charges even in cases where there is a high likelihood of guilt, in large part due to respect for the office. Gerald Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon embodies this norm.

What can the U.S. learn from other countries that have prosecuted former presidents? And what can we learn from American history about the prosecutions of political figures? Is the prosecution of former heads of state simply the weaponization of justice mechanisms? And how common is this political charge?
